What to expect for your session

How can I prepare my horse for our session?

While a good bath and clipping beforehand is always ideal, especially in New England we know that’s not always possible. Ensure your horse is given a thorough grooming before your shoot. For horses with any white attributes I highly recommend using a product like Sport Horse Essentials waterless shampoo and stain remover. A good hoof polish and coat spray is never a bad idea as well. Have some fly spray, a damp rag and a hairbrush handy. Additionally, having an extra person or more on hand to assist is a big plus. Give any tack you’re planning on using for our shoot a good clean and polish beforehand, as well as your boots if you’re planning to wear them.

If your horse is higher strung, or feeling a little fresh or spicy on the day of our posed shoot I’d suggest giving them a good lunge or some work beforehand. If your horse will be doing liberty photos (kicking up their heels in the pasture for some action shots) perhaps consider keeping them inside overnight, and bring props to the shoot to get them moving. Some items I’ve had great success using to get action shots: a bag whip, a trash bag or a foil blanket, a plastic container with rocks or treats inside, a good-sized wall mirror or reflector to get them stretching that neck or snorting.

How can I prepare myself for our shoot?

I understand that not everybody is comfortable in front of the camera lens, that’s why we’ll take our time to discuss posing that suits your style and ways we can make you more comfortable. I suggest spending some time in front of the mirror before our shoot to get more comfortable and see which angles/poses/facial expressions are your favorites. Candid shots are some of my favorites—just you and your horse interacting without having to worry about posing.

What should I wear?

You’re welcome to wear your show clothes, riding outfit with tall or western boots, a casual outfit, or a gown- whichever makes you most comfortable! With longer sessions you’re also welcome to change outfits or tack, time permitting. We will discuss your vision for the session prior to your date, and we can determine which outfits and colors will look the best with your horse/tack/foliage. Give your boots and tack a good clean and polish beforehand, and I highly suggest bringing your outfit to the shoot on a hanger so that it doesn’t get wrinkled or creased on the drive over, then changing into your photo session outfit once you’ve arrived and finished grooming your horse to keep clean.

How are my photos selected and delivered?

I offer two options in regards to image selection. You can leave the image selection up to me, or I can upload all of your images to a private album for you to peruse and make your selections for editing. Each photo package includes a certain number of edited digital images, but you’re always welcome to make additional selections. These extra images will be billed at $25 per image for regular images and $50 per image for fine art black background/white background images. Your finished edited images will be delivered via digital download on my site, with the option to purchase a usb drive. Clients can expect finished images to be delivered within 4-6 weeks of image selection, with extensive edits potentially adding an additional 1-2 weeks onto that timeframe.

May I share the photos on social media or my website?

Each package comes with a social media release allowing you to share your photos on your personal social media pages. Photo credit/tagging is not required but is always appreciated!
